Video: "Making It Matter - Impact of Heritage Tourism in Southern Maryland"

Hosted by the St. Mary's County Historic Preservation Commission, Lucille W. Walker, Executive Director of the Southern Maryland Heritage Area spoke on March 19, 2025 on the impact of heritage tourism in Southern Maryland, and the unique possibilities of the future of heritage tourism for the region.

Heritage tourism is about the “power of place” which is built on authentic stories and experiences. Heritage tourism and promoting regional heritage has unique benefits to the economy, culture, and environment through connecting communities, bringing jobs, enhancing waterways and landscapes, strengthening family farms through agritourism, increasing educational opportunities, and promoting pride of place and identity.

Ms. Walker will be providing an update on the newly formed Southern Maryland National Heritage Area and its current and future role in the region, state, and nation.
