Public Hearing Held for Countywide Expansion of Heritage Area in Prince George's County, Maryland

 


On Tuesday, May 6, 2025 he Maryland Heritage Areas Authority hosted a Public Hearing in the Town of Upper Marlboro to hear from the community about a proposal by the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area to expand to include all of Prince George's County, Maryland. Currently, the state-certified heritage area boundary established in 2001 and modified slightly in 2017 is approximately 100 square miles of northern Prince George's. After a presentation about the proposal by Anacostia Trails Heritage Area, several members of the public provided positive testimony including from the Town of Upper Marlboro, the Town of Eagle Harbor, Southern Maryland National Heritage Area, Accokeek Foundation/Piscataway Park, and Joe's Movement Emporium/Creative Suitland. Next the expansion proposal will be voted on by the full Maryland Heritage Areas Authority at a virtual public meeting on May 15, 2026.
